“Her First Day on the Island”
by MSS Traveler: Karen D., RN
I arrived in Oahu on Jan 3, after sitting in traffic in San Francisco for days, then now in heavy traffic on H1 in Oahu, really realized that Iam ready to go “to the bush”. It was a fiasco getting my Hawaii license and getting all this paperwork done, but it’s done. I hung out with my friend, Dawn, on Oahu, went to the beach and shopping, then came here to the big island. Did all my grocery shopping, stopped off in Hilo at a couple beaches, got a new computer, got my rental car, and got my house.
Now, here I am…in Naalehu (Nah ah lay oooo). The drive from Hilo to Naalehu took about 1.5 hours, and it was one of the most beautiful drives I have ever been on. There were hardly any cars. Passed 3 beaches (including the black sand beach) and Volcano National Park, and a little town called Pahala- where my new work is. Then 13 more miles of lush trees and incredible cliffs dropping off into the ocean, and here I am in my little lonely 3 bedroom house. Waiting for the boy and welcoming visitors— plenty of room! So grateful to be here.
I truly feel blessed to have this opportunity to do this, and so far, the people that I have met have been very friendly and nice. My town has the Southernmost Bar in the US, and 9 miles from my house is South Point Park (southernmost point in the US). South Point Park was amazing. It was getting dark, but you could see the Pacific Ocean for thousands of miles and it was breathtaking!!! And the weather is great. 80′s, windows open, ceiling fans on all the time. How could it get any better? And there’s no traffic, loud noise, crowds of people, Walmart, and all the other crap that messes up nature. I’m out here in the boonies and I’m loving it so far!! IT IS BEAUTIFUL OUT HERE! And this is only the first day. I’m gonna trample all over this island and find everything worth staying here forever for!
